The Most Important Attribute

I recently asked a respected mentor a common but powerful question:

“What’s the most important attribute you look for when hiring or choosing someone to work with?”

His answer came instantly: Energy.

He explained that people are like magnets—each one constantly emitting a force. Some draw you in with positivity, curiosity, and enthusiasm. Others push you away with negativity, indifference, or disengagement.

It made me think:

When I walk into a room, do I bring hope, belief, and a sense of possibility that draws others in?

Or do I drain energy and make hard challenges feel even heavier?

We’ve all been in meetings that leave us feeling deflated—often not because of the topic, but because of the people in the room.

Don’t be that person.

Be the one who:

  • Inspires belief in what’s possible.
  • Brings energy that lifts the room.
  • Makes others want to work beside you.

Later that day, I jotted down a few personal reflections on what Energy means to me:

Energy fuels persistence
- When we have real energy for something, we don’t give up easily. We push through setbacks because the drive comes from within.

Energy is the root of passion and purpose
- You can’t have passion without energy. When you follow what energizes you, passion follows—and with it, meaningful purpose.

Energy sparks growth - The things that energize us are often the things we’re curious about. That curiosity pushes us to learn, stretch, and evolve.

Key Lesson:

Your energy speaks before you do. Remember, the energy you bring shapes the experience of everyone around you.
